Backstage Snacking at London Fashion Week

Whilst most of the focus at London Fashion Week was on SS15 fashion trends, Look Magazine were keeping a close eye on the hottest snacking trends backstage. Look contacted me to get the nutritional low down on the most popular snacks spotted at LFW. Here they are:

LUNA PROTEIN BARS

A great energy boosting snack, protein fills us up and keeps us satisfied while the added B vitamins are essential for converting food to energy. But beware, the second highest ingredient is sugar in the form of cane syrup. They’re a better choice than a chocolate bar but eat them in moderation – preferably after a workout.

BOXED WATER

The benefits of drinking enough water are endless. From glowing, hydrated skin to better concentration – staying hydrated is essential for ensuring models look and feel fresh for fashion week. Even better, this brand is super focused on environmental practices meaning you don’t have to feel guilty about the impact your old plastic bottles are having on the planet.

CHOBANI

Natural, live Greek yoghurt with no artificial ingredients means Chobani is a better choice than your average low fat yoghurts which are often filled with artificial additives. Dairy doesn’t suit everyone though as it can exacerbate digestive issues and flare up skin conditions. Personally I prefer a coconut milk yoghurts like Coyo.

VITA COCO CAFE

All the hydrating benefits of coconut water with an added boost of caffeine – it’s no wonder Vita Coco Café is a popular option for snacking at London Fashion Week. However, just one carton contains four teaspoons of sugar. Instead, I would recommend Vita Coco’s natural coconut water. Same hydration, less sugar.

BLUEPRINT GREEN CLEANSE

Nutritionists love a green juice! Green vegetables based juices are rich in a number of beneficial nutrients and are surprisingly filling. Always opt for a juice with a higher concentration of vegetables and minimal or no fruit. Fruit juices can be surprisingly high in sugar.

FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH JUICE

Strawberries, raspberries and blueberries are rich sources of anti-ageing antioxidants, fantastic nutrients for skin health. Hemp protein and coconut oil ensure a healthy, satisfying balance of carbohydrates, proteins and fats.  The only downside here is the agave syrup – it’s high in fructose, one of the worst types of sugars when used in a concentrated form.

GRANOLA, PEANUT BUTTER AND APPLE SLICES

Combining apples with peanut butter makes a great snack. The natural fat in peanut butter will help slow the release of carbohydrates from the apple providing a nutrient packed, fibre rich, lasting energy snack. Granola can appear healthy but it’s often high in sugar so stick to apple slices spread with crunchy sugar free peanut butter instead.
