3 Things I’ve Learnt About Weight Loss

Having worked with hundreds of women and men to help them reach and maintain their ideal weight, I have learnt a lot about weight loss along the way.

Much of this knowledge surrounds effective dietary strategies, health optimisation and how to support long term behavioural change. But I have also learnt lessons that are not so widely discussed when it comes to weight loss journeys.

Here are three of these lessons that I would like to share with you today.

IT’S NOT OBLIGATORY TO DO IT ALL AT ONCE

Often one of the first things a new client will as us is ‘how long do you think it will take me to get down to my target weight’. We would be lying if we gave a definitive answer to this. Not because we don’t know the average amount of weight someone can lose over a period of time, but because of life. We work with clients who have consistently lost weight week on week and reached their target in one fell swoop. But that’s not always the case. A break might occur for a couple of weeks due to Christmas or a couple of months due to getting to grips with home schooling, and that’s ok. The main thing is that your end goal isn’t delayed indefinitely.

SOMETIMES, MAINTAINING IS AN ACHIEVEMENT

Following on from my first point, holidays, Christmas, birthdays and unexpected events all happen. During these periods, simply maintaining your weight and not gaining any can be an achievement in itself. We work with our clients to make plans for these situations. To ensure a balance is struck between enjoying celebrations and not feeling out of control. This year, it was wonderful to hear from clients who experienced their first Christmas that did not result in weight gain. And the best part? Not one of them was deprived of their favourite festive treat foods.

WE ARE ALL ON OUR OWN JOURNEY

Many of our clients come through word of mouth. Often they have seen a friend, colleague or family member lose weight and have asked for our details. With this comes a certain degree of expectation. Perhaps that they will lose weight at the same speed as their friend. Or that they’re going to go onto the same sort of dietary strategy we put their sister on. This is often not the case. We really are all so different and it is our job to identify what is right for you as an individual. We’ll take into account your personal preferences to decide on the best way forward together. It’s easy to compare ourselves to others, but we strongly encourage you to focus on your own journey.
